2011 children & cadet European championships
Hungary 14-16th October .

July 2010

Scotland   has  a   new   world   champion

David Carter ,Ayr Burakudo Shotokan Karate Club representing Scottish Karate Alliance (SKA)
at the 2010 World Union of Karate -do Federation ( WUKF)  children .cadet and junior world
karate championships, in Sao Paulo Brazil  took first place in the cadet (15 -17 years)
shobu-ippon kumite .

In the quarter final David faced  strong punching Belgian which he overcame by blocking and
counter punching to set up an all Scottish semi-final against his fellow club member Adam Steven .
Adam had won a tremendous victory against a very large and strong Brazilian in his quarter
final by simply being faster and using better karate and so the stage was set for an all Scottish
semi . Both players knowing each other so well kept trying feighting techniques to try to make
there opponent make a error and eventually Adam slipped up allowing David to score with a
punch .This forced Adam into attack to try to equalise which left gaps in his guard and David
exploited this to win 2 -0  and to the final .
David's opponent was Brazilain who had a large local support behind him but the noise did not
upset David and he started very relaxed. Both fighters were holding back showing each other
respect and then disaster David lost concentration and the Brazilain scored. 1-0 down David had
no choice but to attack ,which he did pushing his opponent all over the area but to no avail and
the final whistle blew. Scottish heads went down and the St. Andrew's cross's hung low on the
stadium wall .

As the match was 1-0 and  you need to win by a full point or 2 -0 the referees had to decide the
winner and they could vote for Brazil due to there single score or for a draw if they felt the Scottish
fighter had fought harder been more skilful and aggressive and had tried harder to win . The vote
Brazil votes Brazil Scotland vote Brazil Romania vote draw Germany vote draw and it was left to
the Hungarian referee and as time stood still he voted a DRAW and therefore a 3-2 vote means
the match was declared a draw and an extra match had to be fought .
The St. Andrews crosses rose high again through the packed 15,000 seated stadium and
Scottish voices could be heard  above the din  " Come on Davy boy " and did he not just ,Right
from the restart David pressed forward and landed a strong punch on the Brazilain's head 1-0
Scotland .With his opponent rattled David weaved across the floor and again landed a perfect
head punch to win  2- 0 and become WUKF the world champion .
Congratulations also to Adam Steven , from Burakudo who won the bronze medal
David is a member of Burakudo Shotokan Karate Club which meet at Citadel Leisure Centre, Ayr
on Saturday and Monday and at Prestwick & Monkton North Church on a Tuesday and Thursday
as well as at Troon (Loans Scout Hall ) on a Sunday and Wednesday .
